Gladiolus: Thing you should know.
Gladiolus: Thing you should know.
We provide our customer each and every knowledge of Gladiolus which required for the cultivation. Gladiolus can grow in a variety of soils. A good additive to the soil is compost manure. Gladiolus prefers a pH of 6 to 6.5. Gladiolus have a pest that thrives on the folliage and flowers, it is known as the thrip. The thrip leaves a whitish streak. If the floret is damaged or attacked by the thrip this can cause the flower from opening. As a preventative it is recommended to dust Gladiolus with an insecticide labelled for thrip control.
History of the Gladiolus:
Gladiolus is a member of the iris family. The florets range from 1" to 8" in diameter. Gladiolus is mostly native to South America, however, some species are found in the wild in Southern and Eastern Europe. Gladiolus is Latin for "small sword" and refers to the shape of the leaves.
Culture:
Gladiolus is the one of requires minimum care, however, be careful you can't ignore them either. When the Gladiolus is young you'll need to control the weed invasion. Mulching will help keep the moisture around the plant and reduce the weeds. Make sure that the Gladiolus gets plenty of water. At least 1" of water is required for good growth. (That’s allotting of water). Be careful allot of consideration is needed when deciding where this plant is going to go in your garden/landscape. You can't place it next to a plant that requires a minimum of water, or in a pH that is drastically different than what is required for this plant to grow. If there is a lack of water, it could harm the spikes which produce the flowers; the tubers (corms) could under develop. Another key point is to hill the soil around the plant when the plants are about 8" tall, then stake them. Don't place Gladiolus in a windy area.
